The role of keyboards may soon be diminished

February 24th, 2008 · No Comments

With more advanced technologies like voice recognition and touch screen, the role of the conventional QWERTY keyboard may reach it’s final destination soon. The conventional keyboards will be replaced by high tech key recognition modules that can be attached or embedded within a computer system.

Microsoft envisions the future computers without keyboards but voice recognition modules that will do what conventional keyboards do and even more. Microsoft believes that in five years time, internet search engines will be utilized by voicing out commands to the computer rather than keying in keywords into the search bar. Although this may sound too futuristic, but better voice recognition algorithm and maths will allow more accurate voice recognition — even for the weirdest accent.

On top of that, faster processors will allow more on-the-fly calculations that can allow voice recognition to be feasibly implemented in computer systems. Prior to this, there were news that search engines will allow image searchers that gives the power of users to search the WWW through similar images rather than keywords.

With increasing sophistication of technology, there will be myriads of ways to give input to a computer. And one day, these newer technologies may render the keyboards obsolete.
