Mobile coverage at the top of Mount Everest

February 18th, 2008 · No Comments

Getting a reception would be the last thing on your mind if you happen to be half way to the top of the tallest mountain in the world. I don’t think you’d even bother to bring your phone up the treacherous climb! However, a technology breakthrough will change the way mountaineers communicate.

China Mobile have successfully tested a transmission station at 6,500m on Mount Everest. It also has two other stations located at 5,200m and 5,8200m which is able to provide communication to the mountain climbers. These 3 transmission stations will provide mobile phone communication throughout the journey up the world’s highest peak.

With mobile communication, mountain climbers can call for help when in need or be warned of imminent danger that may be heading towards them. Thus, mobile communications on Everest may reduce the number of fatalities that Everest receive each year.

On top of that, the communication station will also be used during this year’s Olympic torch relay which is said to be taking the flame up to the 8,850 summit.
