Benchmarking Windows Vista SP1 and Windows XP SP2

February 17th, 2008 · 1 Comment

So you’ve just got your new computer with your hard earned cash. If you’ve DIY-ed your rig, you’ll be in a tight position when you’re choosing one of the important component of your new computer — your operating system. You could choose to go with free OS like the various flavours of Linux distros or choose commonly used commercial OS like Windows.

As you might have already known, Microsoft’s newest product (i.e Vista) isn’t the best OS they’ve produced (at least currently). However, the current Vista Service Pack 1 is said to cure all Vista’s ailments and boost its performance. But is this the right time for staunch XP users to migrate to Vista?

ZDnet ran a lengthy article on benchmarking an XP system with a Vista system. It was a pure non-graphic card intensive kinda benchmarking (CPU, filesystem, etc) and in most cases, Windows XP came out tops.

Well, it is a tough choice between sticking to the existing stable Windows XP operating system or changing to the newer Vista OS. Do ask yourself whether you’d need the OS upgrade (which most of the times I don’t find necessary; at least for now).

An upgrade would be good if you have the latest hardware and an avid gamer. The directX 10 support that XP lacks would be your key reason to switch to Vista. On the other hand, if you are an student doing some engineering course, you’d rather stick to Vista because some commercial softwares that your school is using may only be available on XP. This is after knowing that some of my friends who are on Vista (which came with the new laptops in campus) are having a hard time getting their embedded systems project going as the software available is meant for XP. Tough luck!
