Fancy surfing “full internet” on your handphone browser?

January 20th, 2008 · No Comments

Currently, you can browse the internet on your mobile phone but you can’t actually access youtube, myspace, facebook or any Active X application online. Mobile processors in today’s phone does not have the capacity to do so. However, Intel has came out with a new mobile processor which will be in their Menlow platform that could place today’s mobile processors to extinction.

One of the greatest potential that the Menlow platform can bring about to the mobile world is more battery life through an efficient, power saving processor codenamed, Silverthorne. Unlike the processors in smartphones today, the price of efficiency does not translate too much on its processing power. Thus, the processor (smaller than the size of a twenty-cents coin) will able to run powerful smartphones with better battery stamina.

Other than that, the Silverthrone architecture is based on an x86 chip. This is similar to the family of processors that runs your current desktops and laptops. Hence, programs coded in your everyday computing environment need not be re-programed and re-compiled to be functional on the mobile devices. Thus, this allows lots of program that is currently on PC to be directly ported to your next generation mobile phones. This means that you can run a full Java application, active X and flash (you can watch youtube!) on your browser — hell, you can even record a video on your phone and “youtube” it using 3.5G!

The Silverthorne processor will be launched with frequencies ranging from 1.0Ghz to 2.0Ghz.
