ASUS hints on next generation Eee PC

January 1st, 2008 · 2 Comments

The Eee PC has been on of the best selling computer devices in 2007 since its launch. Even here in Singapore, the response to this small but useful gadget was excellent. It has topped selling lists all over the world during the Christmas shopping spree! People loved its mobility and the small size+weight of the Eee PC. Well, the Eee PC will get much hotter as Asus hints on the next generation Eee PC before a WiMax event this coming January the 7th.

The next generation Asus Eee PC will probably include support for WiMax. WiMax is a wireless broadband service (like WiFi) which covers a larger area of up to 5 miles radius and offers larger bandwidth of up top 74Mbps (as compared to HSDPA lower bandwidth connection). Asus is currently working with Intel and Sprint to make this possible.

Intel has been working on a new laptop model that supports WiMax. Intel’s Montevina notebook platform will support WiMAX in Q2 2008 and the Menlow UMPC platform — presumably the foundation for ASUS’ next generation Eee PC — will also feature 3G and WiMAX integration. With the integration of WiMax and 3G, Asus Eee PC will truely be a mobile monster!

This means that you can subscribe to mobile broadband services which is offered by the telco companies in Singapore (M1, Starhub & Singtel) and enjoy wireless roaming all over the island with HSDPA. Or you can connect to the WiMax services provided by Qmax in certain locations in Singapore. This is all done through an integrated chip and without unnecessary adapters!

On top of the new wireless integration, Asus plans to increase its screen size from 7″ to 8.9″. With the wider screen size, users can get a decent screen resolution of about 1024*600 instead of the current 800*600 resolution. This move is in response to many complaints that the Asus Eee PC screen is rather small which leads to a lack of desktop real estate.

Asus plans to sell 3.8 million of its Eee PC in the next fiscal year and it plans to do upgrades to meet this target.
