1. ONLINE SHOPPING: People are scared to do online transaction because they are worried that people can steal their credit card details. The danger of online shopping lies with an unsecured PC (without firewall and anti-viruses) combined with poor computing habits (frequent sites that cannot be trusted, etc). To ensure that you can have a piece of mind while shopping online, address the issue brought up above. And always shop at trusted sites which employ necessary protection. Always look for safe credit card certificates on sites.
2. FIREWALL ARE FOR SISSIES: Firewall acts as a barrier between everything out there on the internet and your computer’s operating system. Without basic protection between the internet and yourself, you are probably screwed. And this will happen very soon! There are basic free firewalls out there which you can use. One example will be Zonealarm.
3. XP SERVICE PACK 2 SUX. Fearful of the looming incompatibilities with programs, there remain some staunch holdouts against this 3-year-old service pack. But these issues have already been dealt with long ago, making SP2 a must have for all Windows XP system.
4. I’M FINE WITH WEP. Employing WEP with your wireless router is better than nothing but not by much. Cracking the security protocol takes minimal effort. If your hardware’s compatible, run WPA2. Or else, consider upgrading.
5. THE PENGUIN PROTECTS US ALL: Yes, Linux is far more secure than your normal unprotected Windows machine. But don’t be lulled into a false sense of security. Install any applicable updates and practice safe computing habits no matter which OS you’re sporting.
