HOW-TO increase your torrent download speeds!

July 6th, 2006 · No Comments

How can we live without it? I’m sure many of you have encountered and used this software. The torrents are “God sent” and brought about a change in P2P file transfer networks. Once we are so used to Kazaa and its mirrors like iMesh, Limewire and eMule. After supernova.org opened up a website dedicated to torrent file downloads, bittorent was in. And its been like that since then.

Bittorent have some crucial plus points that the other P2P programs don’t have. (my own opinion that is) One of the most crucial aspects that the torrents have over the other P2P programs is their feedback/comments section on their download page (similar to what is found on torrentspy.com) This will prevent bogus downloads and bad files!I’m sure many of you have at least experienced it once using Kazaa or Limewire, where your downloads turn out to be BOGUS. haha.. Simply frustrating isn’t it? After 24 hours of agonizing wait, the 800mb file turned out to be bad! That would be solved by the comments section in popular torrent sites. But the downside is that many noobs out there like to give bad remarks on some of the files, making your feel insecure when downloading it. haha.. CRAZY world man!

Ok. Enough of the talking. Lets get to the good stuffs. How to tune up your torrent program so that it performs damn well for you. Torrent download speeds varies due to many reasons. It could be your own ISP bandwidth, bad cables, degrading modem, hardware problems, spywares, low file seeders, etc. If you don’t fall in all of those category, then maybe you need to tweak that system of yours. In this tutorial, I’ll be using bitcomet v 0.68. First and foremost before tweaking your system, you’ve got to open up certain ports in your modem/router. By default, if your modem/router is under hardware firewall, bittorent transfers will be very slow. Unless you don’t have a firewall guarding your modem, you can skip this step. Else, do visit Portforward.com to read their guides by choosing what modems/routers you are using. Afther that’s done, its time to tweak your bitcomet program!

Just follow these settings, I’m using Singnet Broadband 1500kbps plan. Here’s my settings:

Under Preferences Menu of your bitcomet clients:

Connection Tab
.Global Max Download Rate - No limit
.Global Max Upload Rate: Approximately 80% of your max Upload rate stated by your ISP. Check settings from your ISP’s website. For example, Singnet BB 1500 has a theoretical upload speed of 50kB/s

.Max Simultaneous Download Tasks: 50
.Listen Port: Any port between 20000 and 65534 (using these ports can actually beat those ports that your ISP might have blocked due to P2P programs using them)

Task
-> UPLOAD
.Maximum upload rate per task: No Limit
.Minimum Upload Rate Per seeding task: 3 - 10kb/s

Advanced
.Check every box

Advanced -> Connection
.Only Check - Enable DHT network
.Maximum Connections per task: 250
.Connections to keep per task: 100
.Global maximum upload slots: Auto
.Global minimum upload slots: Auto
.Socket Send Buffer Size: Auto
.Socket start Interval (ms): 300
.Max half-tcp connections: 5
.Use NAT Traversal via UDP: Enable
.Protocol Encryption: Enable (Pls enable! The more people we have the faster it’ll be)

Advanced -> IP Rules
.Only Check - Enable reporting LAN IP to Tracker
.Max Sessions per IP for downloading task: 50
.Max Sessions per IP for uploading task: 5 – 15

If not mentioned, keep the unmentioned settings to their default settings.

When that’s done, try out your new settings on a good seeded torrent and see your download speed increase exponentially. Before trying out these settings, I got 5-15Kb/s download speeds. After configuring, on the average, I get at least 70-80Kb/s and max 160++Kb/s on a well seeded torrent! Try out today! Don’t miss out on the higher bandwidths!

This is one of the speeds that I got when using my old bitlord using these settings too! Try it out!
